7 FPS Games like Call of Duty

Call of Duty hasn’t changed much, even with all the updates. It’s the same predictable meta shifts that feel like it's just there to sell bundles, paired with the same old cycle, spawn-die-repeat.

A lot of players are starting to feel bored and are looking for something with more depth, less toxicity, and of course, without the constant push for microtransactions, which can feel exploitative sometimes.

Not to mention the tons of complaints about hackers in Warzone, the unbalanced weapon metas that drag on for months, and increasingly aggressive Skill-based matchmaking or SBMM.

If you’re feeling the same way, the FPS genre has plenty of alternatives that are worth exploring and we got it all covered. Here are 7 great games like COD that you can try:

Battlefield

Battlefield might be exactly what you’re looking for if you need a breather from COD. Unlike the latter's smaller maps and reflex-driven gameplay, Battlefield offers huge, expansive maps that support big battles of up to 128 players.

You’re not just running and gunning in this game but coordinating with your squad, with an excellent focus on teamwork and strategy, capturing objectives, and adapting to dynamic situations.

The best part is the vehicle combat, where you can control tanks, jets, and helicopters to change the course of the battle, not to mention the destructible environments that add a layer of chaos and strategy.

Nothing beats the feeling of leveling a building to flush out an enemy squad or watching a tornado tear through the battlefield in Battlefield 2042. Even though it had a rough start, glad to see that the developers have been actively working to improve the game as they reintroduced class-based gameplay, more polished content.

If Call of Duty feels like a fierce, close-quarters fight, Battlefield offers an immersive, cinematic experience filled with tactical thinking and collaboration.

Halo Infinite

halo infinite- best alternative to COD

In Halo Infinite, you are not just a soldier but you are stepping in as Master Chief, a supersoldier with modern combat gear, and skills in a sci-fi adventure that carries on the plot of the preceding Halo games. The stunning visuals seem like an underrated statement of how breathtaking the graphics are. What blew me off was how different it feels from COD.

Halo Infinite's gunplay is way more tactical. You gotta land your shots because the time-to-kill (TTK) is pretty high. Winning a gunfight here feels way more rewarding because it's about skill and positioning.

The movement also stands out with the grapple hook as an absolute game-changer. You can quickly escape enemy fire or reach cover, snatch weapons from a distance, and reposition yourself in combat. It is more versatile as compared to COD's grounded movement.

The multiplayer is where Halo Infinite really shines. It’s less about killstreaks and more about teamwork, map control, and mastering power weapons like the Energy Sword or Gravity Hammer.

Then there’s the campaign. Call of Duty campaigns are usually short and heavily scripted, Halo Infinite gives you an open-world feel where you explore Zeta Halo at your own pace, choose your battles, and feel like you’re in control of the story. It’s having more freedom and not just another linear shootout.

Titanfall 2

titanfall 2 - COD alternative

Titanfall 2 has this incredible mix of speed and strategy that really gets your adrenaline pumping. You play as a pilot, the movement in this game is on another level. Wall-running, double-jumping, and sliding are essential to how you play.

But what really sets Titanfall 2 apart is the Titans. These massive, badass mechs completely transform the way you play. One moment, you’re sprinting across rooftops as a nimble pilot, and the next, you’re stomping through the battleground in a heavily armed war machine.

Each Titan has its personality like you’re dashing in with Ronin’s sword or holding down a lane with Legion’s minigun. Timing your Titanfall and knowing when to jump in or out adds another awesome layer of strategy.

And the campaign? You team up with BT-7274, your Titan, and the bond between the two of you feels real. There’s one level called “Effect and Cause,” where you’re literally jumping between two timelines, it’s quite mind-blowing and easily one of the coolest features to experience.

The multiplayer is just as good. It’s fast-paced, chaotic, and somehow perfectly balanced between pilots and Titans. Titanfall 2 also throws AI-controlled enemies into the mix, which makes it more convenient for newbies while still being challenging for veterans.

What's great about this game is how it makes you feel like a total badass; it’s about using your movement, environment, and mech to outplay opponents. Compared to COD, it feels much more dynamic and rewarding.

Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege - Call of Duty Best Alternative

Far from the COD frenzy, Rainbow Six Siege is slow and methodical. Rainbow Six Siege focuses more on tactical planning and coordination, highlighting careful movement, communication, and using unique operator abilities.

What makes this game a big hit is its operator system. Instead of generic soldiers, you choose from a log of unique characters, each with their gadgets and abilities. You can use Sledge’s hammer to bust through walls, set up traps with Frost, or scan for enemy gadgets with IQ, every operator brings unique qualities to the team. And all of you will make the team work.

The destructible environments like breaching walls, blowing holes in floors, or reinforcing doors and windows feel like a game of chess, where you’re constantly trying to outsmart your rivals. But this actually works both ways. That reinforced wall can be blown open by your enemies and completely change the game.

So yes, communication is critical in Siege, and the level of teamwork and coordination that Call of Duty just doesn’t require. It’s not a game where you can just rely on raw skill, you need to think, adapt, and work with your team.

Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal - Games like COD

If you are into action like COD, Doom Eternal matches the rhythm, but a little over-the-top. You're not just fighting enemies, but ripping and tearing through hordes of demons with a ridiculous arsenal. Mind you, these demons have weak points for players to discover. Many demons have specific weak points that can be targeted for maximum damage.

The Super Shotgun is a fan-favorite because it bears significant damage in a single shot, making it highly effective against most enemies, but only effective in close combat. And here's the catch, ammo is scarce in Doom, which forces you to be strategic in your weapon choices.

Because the game is filled with much action, the graphics are brutal and incredibly gory but the sophisticated design includes hidden areas, secrets, and challenging platforming parts that encourage exploration and those who go off the main path will be rewarded.

The Battlemode in Doom is a 2v1 multiplayer mode, where you either play as two demons or as the Doom Slayer himself. It's super intense and uneven, which makes the game unique and challenging.

Escape from Tarkov

Escape from Tarkov- Call of Duty best alternative

Escape from Tarkov is seriously hardcore. You're constantly battling other players and those tough AI, all while trying to stay alive and find good loot. It has a strong focus on player vs. player vs. environment (PvPvE) combat.

EFT's main emphasis is survival, finding good loot, and knowing how your bullets fly. Every death is permanent, so you really need to think about your every move. It's way different from Call of Duty where you just respawn and keep going.

This game is also a high-risk, high-reward type where every raid is a gamble. If you risk losing valuable gear, expect that the potential rewards are notable.

Moreover, the freedom to choose playstyle is far from COD. In EFT, you choose your own playstyle, it can be aggressive looting, cautious scavenging, or specializing in specific tasks which is rarely found in more structured shooters like COD.

Despite being more immersive than COD, Escape from Tarkov demands a lot on your hardware. You might experience performance issues like stuttering, lag, and crashes, especially during peak hours. Nevertheless, this game gives you an extra kick to get out of the COD toxicity.

Insurgency: Sandstorm

Insurgency: Sandstorm - Call of Duty alternative

If you're looking for a more realistic and tactical shooter, I highly recommend checking out Insurgency: Sandstorm. Call of Duty is fun, but it feels a bit like an arcade.

You have a wider field of view in Insurgency: Sandstorm which gives you a better sense of your surroundings and helps anticipate enemy movements. In Call of Duty, the field of view seems a bit more restricted, holding the focus on the immediate action.

In Sandstorm, you really feel the weight of each shot. The recoil is intense, and you need to be precise with your aim. You also have to rely heavily on your teammates, so communicating and coordinating is critical in every move.

This game can be played best with a mouse and keyboard to gain precise aim from that level of control. While you can use a controller, it might not feel as natural, in my opinion. Call of Duty, on the other hand, feels great on both PC and console.

Newbies might find Insurgency: Sandstorm too intimidating initially, but once you hold your ground, it's gratifying. Some say this game is more challenging than COD due to its complex mechanics and emphasis on strategic gameplay. However, the sense of realism and the importance of teamwork create a much more immersive and engaging experience

We'll likely see a continued push towards believable and challenging experiences in the FPS genre. Real-world movements are more likely to be added soon with the help of VR and AR technology.

These 7 games have their unique strengths that make them the best alternative options for Call of Duty. So the next time you feel a little overwhelmed with COD, why not shake things up and try something new?
