Rumored Players to join MLS in 2025

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, MLS clubs are already identifying their targets for the upcoming transfer window. Players are dropping hints about their next moves, with some stars hinting to join MLS. Over the years we've seen big names join the league, paving the way for others to follow. Lionel Messi was the most recent marquee signing in 2023, breaking multiple records in merchandising and kit sales. Also, Messi marked his debut with a stunning free kick, proving to the world that he remains one of the best in the game. Let’s take a look at the players considering a move to MLS, with clubs eager to secure their signatures.

Rumored Players

Neymar Jr- Inter Miami/Chicago Fire

One of the most talked-about rumors is Neymar Jr' s eagerness to reunite with his former teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez at Inter Miami, potentially bringing the MSN trio back together. Fans are anxiously waiting to see if this dream reunion can materialize. If it happens, it's certain they would dominate the MLS. Neymar has further fueled speculation, teasing football fans during an interview at the Globe Soccer Awards, saying that it would be incredible to reunite with his former teammates from FC Barcelona. 

He was also rumored to be in talks for a transfer to Chicago Fire, with the club reportedly making significant efforts to secure him. However, the move appears difficult due to Neymar's substantial wage demands. Currently, Neymar is struggling with Al Hilal, dealing with injuries and failing to adapt as he had hoped. Over two seasons with the club, he has made just four appearances, scoring one goal, and has missed the majority of matches due to fitness and injury issues. With his contract set to expire this summer, a move to MLS seems like a logical next step for Neymar Jr.

Kevin De Bruyne - San Diego FC

The Belgian superstar, Kevin De Bruyne, is reportedly interested in a move to MLS. Regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, his potential transfer to San Diego would have an immediate impact, especially alongside Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, in San Diego's debut MLS season. With De Bruyne's contract set to expire next summer, many options remain open for the Belgian.

Kevin De Bruyne is still working his way back to full fitness after his injury problems, as he continues to prove himself as a pivotal player for Manchester City. However, now might be the perfect time for him to consider a move. San Diego has only one designated player spot remaining, and it’s clear they will make every effort to secure De Bruyne for their team.

Cristiano Ronaldo - LA Galaxy/San Diego FC

Whether you believe it or not, Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly interested in making a move to MLS. Ronaldo is out of contract in the summer, and he may be intrigued by the chance of reuniting in the same league as eight-time Balon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. Considering the financial requirements of such a deal, it appears that one or two clubs has the finances to make it happen, with LA Galaxy and San Diego emerging as the front runners. LA Galaxy, regarded as the most successful team in the MLS, has already signed soccer stars in the past, such as David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimović. 

Without a doubt, MLS will not offer Ronaldo a contract close to what he's earning in Saudi Arabia, However, it would provide him the opportunity to play in another growing and competitive league while potentially boosting the fortunes of last year’s MLS Cup winners. San Diego is also reserving the last designated player spot, aiming to fill it with a game-changing player. While no concrete negotiations have started, the prospect of Ronaldo joining MLS has generated significant interest.

Wilfred Zaha - Charlotte FC

Wilfred Zaha made a shock move to the MLS in January 2025, joining Charlotte FC on a one-year loan deal from Galatasaray. The Ivory Coast international took this step to rejuvenate his career after an inconsistent spell with Galatasaray. Despite being offered a new contract by the Turkish club, Zaha, who had previously struggled during a loan spell with Lyon, making only six appearances, decided this was the right move for his career. Reuniting with former manager Dean Smith, Zaha joined Charlotte FC as a designated player, with an option to extend his stay for another year.

Charlotte's General Manager is confident that Zaha will make an immediate impact on the team, bringing his flair to the attacking front. He started training with the team immediately, reuniting with former teammate Ashley Westwood from their time together at Burnley FC. Zaha is working hard to get into best shape just in time for Charlotte FC's first match against the Seattle Sounders on February 22.

Antoine Griezmann - LAFC

Antoine Griezmann still has a year remaining on his contract with Atletico Madrid, but a move to MLS this summer is has not been ruled out. Reports from late 2024 suggested that Griezmann was considering his future in 2025, with LAFC expressing interest to sign the Frenchman. Credible journalists have revealed that Griezmann's contract includes a relatively low release clause, making a transfer more attainable for interested clubs.

LAFC’s recent signings of former World Cup winners Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud have further fueled speculation that Griezmann may be eager to reunite with his national teammates in Los Angeles. If they manage to acquire Griezmann, it would significantly boost their chances of claiming the MLS Cup.
